Back across the road the remainder of the back nine swings its way out under the aforementioned cedar trees in front of the manor and returns directly under the watchful eye of the 19th century building at the end of the 17th.
Favourite hole
It’s always handy when my favourite hole is the 18th, as I don’t have to break my rhythm. Aldwark Manor’s signature hole is only a shortish par three at 139 yards but is an utter delight. The hole weaves its way through the high trees to the raised green at the end and jumps over a quaint waterfall that has, over time created a lovely duck pond. Geese are often seen bathing and are tame enough to share this magnificent space with. A pretty bridge takes you over the wake of the waterfall to the green ahead but be sure to hit it, as there aren’t a lot of alternatives. It’s a beautifully designed hole; set off perfectly by the colourful natural beauty it finds itself in and well worth the four- hour walk, believe me.
Verdict
Aldwark Manor is regarded as one of North Yorkshire’s finest golf courses and it’s not difficult to see why. The estate is magnificent and the tranquil setting and idyllic location epitomises this genteel part of the British Isles in a nutshell.
The parkland course is an easy walk at 5999 yards but is fascinating and will keep you entertained throughout your day. The quality of the greens and general upkeep of the grounds will beg you to tip your hat to the green-keepers should you see them.
The manor house itself is a work of art and worth a nose around too. Accompanied by ‘Reflections’ – a state of the art Spa and gymnasium – Aldwark Manor has everything for everyone and I recommend a visit or four.
