174 yards separates you from the flagstick and all but a small proportion of that is carry over water.
The fourteenth hole is of very similar character but in my opinion an even better par 3. A true do or die hole that conjures images in your mind of the famous seventeenth at Sawgrass or the sixteenth at Augusta National. It is slightly shorter than the seventh at 166 yards, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s easier, as water encroaches far more around the green not just in front but to the right and behind the small target as well. If you bail out too far left then a deep bunker also waits to punish you.
The fourteenth is the start of a great finishing stretch at Aston Wood, and part of that stretch is the signature hole of the course, the 382 yard par 4 seventeenth.
A lake runs the entire length of the fairway to the left and the further you hit your drive along this par 4 the tighter that fairway becomes. The lake then has to be negotiated again for your approach as you play over it to the small green.
More water in play for the home hole at the tee and also by the green. The 559 yard par 5 is truly a 3 shot par 5 and all need to be struck well to make par. The tee shot is played over a huge expanse of water! Cut off as much as you dare as the further left you drive the longer the carry.
The second is played up hill to a second slightly raised fairway. Having safely found the “short grass” another lake with an elegant fountain blocks your route to the flag. Record a par and a well deserved pint waits for you in the 19th bar, time to reflect on a fantastic piece of golfing landscape.
Favourite Hole
Aston Wood Golf Club is a golf course that challenges you with great hole after great hole and so many are worthy of a mention like the seventh, seventeenth and eighteenth, but its tough to look further than the fantastic par 3 fourteenth, as all golfers will know just how rewarding it is to hit the green on a par 3 of this type.
