The club is one of the oldest in the area and, situated to the north of Leicester, enjoying views over the city and hills of Charnwood Forest.
Birstall Golf Club is very proud of its heritage and traditions and so it should be. It was founded in 1901 by a group of local enthusiasts, the most influential being Mr Charles Bennion, a greatly respected local businessman and benefactor, who later in 1928 gave Bradgate Park to the people of Leicestershire.
The course has developed over the years from a meadowland course characterised by the ridge and furrow undulations left behind by medieval farming to a parkland course of great beauty, overlooking the city of Leicester.
Course
This is undoubtedly a well-designed and testing track for most players, with a par of 70 and many mature trees lining the fairways. The layout always remains interesting and it is relatively east walking despite being situated on high ground to the north of Leicester.
This lofty position affords the course some magnificent views over the city and the hills of Charnwood forest.
Birstall has a lovely mature feel to it too, and no wonder, it is one of the oldest courses in the region, having celebrated its centenary year in 2001.
Indeed, in the time since it was opened in 1901, many changes, developments and improvements have taken place to ensure that its course stays at the forefront of the latest changes in the world of golf.
Consequently, it provides a stern and sound test of golf no matter how good a player you are.
There are plenty of hazards to challenge you, so you need be alert at all times to come away with a scorecard worthy of showing off back in the clubhouse.
You need to be on your game from the off, in fact, where you need to be careful not to hit a hook or you could find your ball on the railway line belonging to the Great Central Railway, with steam engines pulling in and out of the station, adjacent to the course.
