From there, the course opens up and is an absolute joy. Tree lined fairways thoughtful bunkering and changing topography make for an enjoyable challenge. The greens are always in good condition and of a fair to quick pace and each hole here has its own particular character and is a good test.
The real challenge to your score comes through the last five holes though. This is a tough run in, with holes of stroke index 1, 7, 5, 13 and 9 in that segment of the course, which contains three par-4s of over 400 yards. The par-3 17th is also a real challenge, especially off the white tees where it is now stretched to 204 yards thanks to a new tee. The last hole, a par-5 of 530 yards, is a fitting finale.
The course is average length by modern standards but there isn’t much room for error anywhere in its 6,239 yards, so it provides a fair and exciting test for virtually all levels of golfer.
The course and the facilities of the clubhouse ensure that members and visitors alike can enjoy a pleasant but challenging round and a friendly, sociable conclusion to their visit.
Favourite hole
The 9th is the signature hole here and many members’ favourite. It’s a straight, short par-4 of 312 yards off the white tees and 302 yards off the yellows, so for the longer hitters can be driveable.
But this is also a classic risk and reward hole because right in front of the green, staring you in the face, is the notorious "Big Bertha" bunker, 20 feet across and deep enough to cause all but the best players some real trouble.
The green makes escaping with a good result from here very tricky because the putting surface slopes down from left to right, so the pin position is critical to the difficulty of the hole. All in all, great fun.
