Sweeping its way around the pines and over the tail end of the question mark shape water feature, an old oxbow of the River Kelvin, the green is a triumph should you hit it in two. It’s an extremely pretty hole and no wonder it is
considered the members’ favourite.
The 15th returns alongside its predecessor and also takes full advantage of the lovely setting it finds itself in. Another beautiful par 3 aims in the opposite direction to the previous one and wouldn’t look out of place at Augusta National. Leading out of the lower end of the course, the 17th tee shot is almost completely blind and advisable to keep right to set up the approach to the green up the hill. The reason for this climb becomes apparent once you walk though the trees to the 18th tee. Possibly the finest finishing par 3 in the land, the 18th faces the magnificent clubhouse 202 yards below. Impossible to deny the sheer beauty of this hole - I guarantee you’ll be reaching for the camera phone. Conveniently it happens to be my favourite hole.
Favourite hole
All I’ll say is wait until you get to the end of the 17th and regardless of your score thus far you’ll unquestionably enjoy the finishing hole as much as I did. It really is quite stunning and you’ll love it.
Verdict
I haven’t enjoyed many golf clubs as much as I have Cawder. The courses are varied and equally pleasurable as they make their way around this fine estate. The clubhouse is the icing on the cake to this ancient establishment and will be savoured by all to make its acquaintance. Be sure to pay the Roman Stone in the Juniors’ changing rooms a visit too – it’s a rare relic well worth ticking off your archaeological list.
