The course is a shade over 6000yards and offers all standards of golfer an excellent examination of their skills. Undulating greens and long holes like the 466yard par 4 11th will play like a five most of the year round whilst the well manicured greens will allow the putts to drop if you read them right.
A wander back over the road takes you to the long but very picturesque par 3 14th. Knock a long iron or rescue wood the requisite 190yards to the green below and let the applause from the overlooking clubhouse guests cheer you on for the remainder of your round.
A brace of lovely holes across a small path include a lengthy par 4 with a beautifully restored hand built stone wall lining the left hand side leading you to the shortest par 3 on offer at Davenport. Only 140yards long it gives you a chance to punch a short iron up to the expansive green ahead but beware of the bunker on the fairway making the hole appear shorter than it is – not to mention the two others guarding any miss-hits.
The 17th takes you sweeping up the hill to the large green at the top and leaves you with arguably the most tantalising tee-shot to finish. At 492 yards from the whites, the 18th tee is at the highest point of the course and offers you the chance to launch one final good one away into to heavens ahead. A pond awaits anything leaking right around the 240yard mark so keep it left to set up a tricky approach to the long and narrow green at the end.
Favourite hole
I love a hole that tests your course management skills and the signature hole 4th will question your tactics immediately. If you’re satisfied your driving is on song then you’ll be tempted to cut the corner of the 339yard dogleg but it’s not what the pro suggests. The green is surrounded by high pines and silver birches capping off a wonderful hole of golf.
