CAREERS NEWS LETTER
Drayton Park Golf Club, Birmingham

Designed by the legendary architect James Braid over 70 years ago, Drayton Park earned its esteemed credentials before most of us were even born.

Golf Ball
Originally the site was home to Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel and his fellow Lords of the Manor of Drayton but after the First World War the “Peel Empire” slid into decline and the estate was sold off in lots of 100 acres or so − just enough for 18 holes.

Just outside the town of Tamworth this beautifully designed course winds its way around the Staffordshire countryside with ease and confidence. The effortless design is a credit to Mr Braid who must have envisaged the inevitable growth of the trees he lined the fairways with and here in the 21st Century the walk down the middle is reminiscent of Oscar night with the trees whistling at you like screaming fans as you walk down the red carpet.

The course
Records indicate that there was possibly a 9hole golf course that went under the name of Tamworth and/or Wigginton at the turn of the 19th Century but falling subscriptions during the war meant this club struggled. After the first world war the interest increased again and the revenue enabled the committee to consider moving location to accommodate a full 18holes.

When James Braid was given the task of designing the new course legend has it that he visited the club one afternoon in 1935 and sketched out the current layout on the train home. Drafting in his friend and golf club architect John R. Stutt, the course was, incredibly open for play within a year.

Golf Ball
The opening hole begins where it should; right out side Mike Passmore’s Professional Shop. A gentle 305yard dogleg right will tempt the big hitters but 200yards straight down the middle will suffice opening up a delicate short iron to the green.

As you return up the 2nd fairway you will inevitably pause to appreciate the clubhouse in all its glory. The expansive green in front begs you to park your ball next to the pin setting up a birdie for all to witness.
