Celebrating its centenary in 2006 Halesowen Golf Club has been challenging the golfing fraternity for over 100 years.
The club marked its centenary last year with a very special day; players sported traditional period costume to celebrate
the landmark with the lady members donning crinoline dresses and the gents wearing their bowler hats and plus fours, it was a traditional affair not to be missed!
The town of Halesowen was, until the thirteenth century known as ‘Halas’ but when King Henry II gifted the town to the Welsh Prince David Owen, it was renamed as ‘Halas–Owen’. It has since been known as Halesowen. Recorded in the Doomsday Book as being larger than Birmingham, Halesowen is situated approximately ten miles to the southwest of Britain?s second largest city and has spawn some very famous residents. Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant grew up here whilst Frank Skinner taught at the college and Bill Oddie studied his ornithology at Earls High School.
THE CLUBHOUSE
Set in the grounds of Leasowes Park, Halesowen Golf Club is centred around its clubhouse which is, quite frankly, beautiful. Designed in the 18th Century the building houses all the usual amenities you would expect from a club of such stature and grace but all finished off with a touch of class. Overlooking the Worcestershire countryside, the clubhouse was designed by the poet and landscape designer William Shenstone who lived there during the 18th century and since has become the pride of Halesowen.
PGA Professional Jon Nicholas has his shop within the building and after stocking up on supplies and the all important course map, a wander around the practice putting green will take you on your way to a fascinating round at Halesowen Golf Club.
THE COURSE
As undulating as you’ll find in the county, the course begins with a relatively simple par 4 on a steep decline down to the green just over 300 yards away. The second tee is set well back in the woods adjacent to where a folly originally used to stand and provides a testing drive along the edge of the woods. The second green is back up the hill and tucked around the side of the clubhouse allowing you the opportunity to gaze in awe at the beauty of the building itself and
enjoy the panoramic vista it faces.
