It has Royal connections which go back generations and the golfing experience is pretty special too.
Location, location, location. It’s what makes most properties hot, and the same applies to golf clubs.
You don’t want to waste your day playing a mediocre course, but you don’t want to fritter away your precious free time getting to the course either. That’s why Hampton Court Palace Golf Club scores so highly.
As the name implies, it’s set in a pretty stunning location - Home Park, in the grounds of Hampton Court Palace to be exact - just half an hour’s travelling time from the centre of London. The local BR station is just minutes away while the A3 is situated just the other side of Kingston Upon Thames.
The golf club enjoys the enviable accolade of being the only one set in a Royal Park and this really is one green oasis in the ’burbs’ you’ll never forget.
The drive down a small road through the Royal Park sets the tone. The land is open and dotted with ancient oaks and herds of deer. The only bricks in sight are those adorning the huge walls that line this historic land, which was once the local hunting ground for Henry VIII when he was in the mood to behead a deer or two rather than a spouse!
Thankfully, Hampton Court Palace Golf course is no disappointment after such an impressive entrance.
The course
Featured in Golf Monthly’s list of "Must Play Courses", this 6,514 yard, par 71 layout covers gently rolling land and so is always easy on the feet - but it also keeps you on your toes.
The layout tests just about every department of the game and it is dominated by symmetrical lines of lime trees and copses of oak planted hundreds of years ago.
The design dates back to 1895 and was remodelled in 1904 by none other than Open Champion Willie Park Junior, who also designed the legendary Sunningdale Old course.
