He was careful to make the course a discreet addition to Home Park, while allowing the golfer wonderful views of the Palace. His influence is strongly felt throughout the round, with slightly raised greens with imaginative contours, gently undulating fairways, strategically placed bunkers and fairways flanked by flowering grasses during the summer months.
His hallmarks are particularly evident around holes 13 to 18 where the land has been shaped to appear it covers the undulating sand dunes of a coastal links - and there are plenty of design features that deliberately foreshorten approach shots to the naked eye, a well known design feature of many old links courses.
The course may not be built on sand dunes but the soil here is very sandy, which is good news for golfers as it means it’s free draining and so perfect for all year round play.
The greens also have the sort of foundation, which allows them to be in peak condition for longer than just about anywhere else around these parts. This club very rarely employs temporary greens and the course didn’t close at all last winter.
A first class putting green and fine long and short game practice areas plus chipping and putting areas complete the picture. There’s a well-stocked Professional shop and two teaching professionals on hand plus buggy and trolley hire.
The Clubhouse
The golfing experience is contrasted by a new and contemporary style clubhouse, completed in September 2003, with a comfortable bar, restaurant and beautiful function room.
It’s bigger and better equipped than most clubhouses - in excess of 10,000 square feet in fact - and it includes male and female locker rooms, a panoramic restaurant and a superb function room overlooking the course that can cater for 100 guests for dinner.
