Overlooking the town of Henley upon Thames high on the rolling hills of the Berkshire countryside, Hennerton Golf Club offers something for everyone.
Originally a 9 hole course, the newly added holes make an interesting and extremely playable18hole layout that has been flipped around so players now begin on the new half leaving the more mature side for the finale.
THE COURSE
Hennerton Golf Club has made full use of the surroundings and squeezed in a cracking track for all who tread the links. You begin your
journey outside William Farrow’s impressive proshop with a nice dogleg right par four to limber you up. Running alongside the practice facilities the hole swings away to a large accommodating green ahead. It’s a nice way to start a tricky
opening nine holes.
The second is driveable but unless you’re confident you’re swinging the driver well I would suggest a lay up and a controlled wedge. It’s a pretty hole asking you to drive over a large ornate pond specifically designed to conserve the protected species of the great crested newt, over a small stream to the green behind. Once the newly planted trees on the right hand side mature it?ll be one of the best on offer.
A brace of par threes completes this part of the course and a short wander around the back of the driving range leads you to a further par three this time you’re faced with a huge drop down into the valley below. Again it’s a very attractive hole and well designed too – the temptation to whack as many as necessary to pop one next to the flag is overwhelming. If you do hit more than one be sure to repair your pitch-marks won’t you?
Hennerton golf club was never meant to be a 7000yard+ course to challenge the Tour Professionals; it was designed to be a shortish
course for those who may not have 4–5hours to while away on the links so any preconception that it’ll be long and wide should disappear before you arrive.
