Its 4391yard scorecard may put off the big hitters but after one round here I’m sure they?ll be back to test a different aspect of their game.
A sweeping par four continues along the valley floor and up to the green ahead. Another shortish par four allows you a better chance for eagle glory at the 8th but make sure the wind is blowing from behind in case you catch it right. The aforementioned pond lies behind the green to catch those who?ve had one too many Weetabix!
A short walk through the trees affords you the first taste of the older part of the course and a slightly different flavour too. This half feels more open and forgiving and treats you to views over the Thames Valley and the town of Henley on the other side of the river.
The first long hole of the course is the 12th, which is a sweeping par four taking you up the hill alongside the driveway to the large green nestled amongst the trees. Its premier stroke index is justified due in part to the fact you haven’t played a long hole up to this point so any hole of nearly 400yards is bound to catch you off guard! A nice short par four follows and would normally tempt you to have a go but with absolutely no vision of the green down the hill another lay up enables this short hole to be
played as a par four should.
A bowl shaped green awaits your mid iron to the next par 3 and then a chance to really swing the driver at the par 5 15th. It’s a long par 5 too –not in length – but depending on the breeze and the connection of the drive. Hit a good one away and you may still find your self with over 200yards to go to the green ahead accompanied by the lovely clubhouse behind.
The finishing hole at Hennerton follows in a similar vain to the 15th and you complete with arguably the most difficult hole. At 437yards from the whites this dogleg par four will test you all the way to the 19th.
FAVOURITE HOLE
The members of Hennerton Golf Club are proud of their signature hole and rightly so; at 182yards from the white tees, the 16th is a wonderful par 3 straddling the valley to the green ahead. It looks long and plays long but as long as you play it well you’ll cherish it forever.
