Founded in 1995, Mersey Valley Golf and Country Club has, along with its 15,000 newly planted broad leaf trees, been steadily growing to become one of Cheshire’s best-loved courses.
Situated a couple of miles outside of Widnes, the course has been cleverly laid-out to make full use of the land on
which it lies. The relatively flat course has encapsulated its low-lying position with the use of attractive ponds and streams that have created natural habitats for all manner of flora and fauna. At 6300 yards, Mersey Valley will provide a good test for all levels of golfer, and after a visit to Andy Stevenson’s well stocked pro shop to pack your bags with all your golfing goodies, a short walk behind will take you to the first tee.
The course
You are eased in gently to your round with a dead straight 347yard par 4 with a nice wide fairway giving you a chance to pluck out the biggest thing in the bag and hit it as hard as you can.
Your first introduction to the aforementioned water features comes at the delightful second hole. At 129yards from the back, this lovely hole will test your short iron play and nerve over the attractive reedy pond to the fore. Everyone loves a short driveable par 4 and the 287yard 5th hole will give the big boys the chance to put their money where their mouth is.
The front nine has four doglegs that wrap themselves around their neighbouring holes nicely. The fourth and final of which takes you back to the clubhouse where refreshments are available to keep you going, in preparation for the back nine.
The designers of Mersey Valley could have taken the easy option of an up and down sardine like course but interesting combination of doglegs and narrow long holes makes the course interesting and extremely playable.
Ensure your halfway snack has settled down before you negotiate the par 3 10th hole. The designers have pushed the R&A’s regulations to the limit here; at 225 yards from the white tees, this long par 3 would certainly test even Garcia’s long iron accuracy at this halfway stage.
