With only about 400 members, there is little chance of being refused a quick nine or even eighteen, whether it be early morning, late evening or perhaps even during work. All the nines start and finish near the clubhouse which makes thing even simpler when it comes to watching the clock.
One of Tony Jacklin’s favourite par 3 holes in golf is actually on the Himalayas course but don’t be fooled by the fact that it doesn’t form part of the main championship eighteen. It is a cute nine which a lot of the members prefer for speed and enjoyment purposes, but at 196 yards into the wind the hole can be fearsome.
Other holes that strike a chord are the first on the Dunes – similar to Machrihanish but without the sea to go over – just a huge bunker lurking, and the fourth on the Shore which although plays fairly players will know a par is a satisfying score indeed.
The course has undergone much work over the last few years, most recently being improvements to the bunkers. The club are in the lucky position of owning a turf farm which gives the capability, expensive as it is, to rivet the bunkers which, even if you are in them, look great.
The future is bright too with 2008 seeing the British Seniors Amateur Championship and the club already selected for the 2011 Open Championship as a final qualifying course. Coupled with the fact that many famous players extol the virtues of the course (among them Mickelson, Palmer, Player, Hagen, Westwood, Braid and Jones) it isn’t difficult to appreciate the quality of the surroundings and the overall golfing experience.
Favourite Hole
Links courses don’t have favourite holes because at links courses they tend to be all good and the true golfer just appreciates playing great links tracks. If a commitment has to be made then any of the holes nearest the sea qualify with justification just because of the views.
