The fairways are a little more generous here, the rough slightly kinder, and the layout slightly shorter (but just as entertaining). As with The Abbotts, the conditioning is fabulous on this course too. It feels that bit newer with more open spaces and less mature trees in evidence. However it has a character all its own thanks to an imaginative layout and a more undulating landscape. This is never more in evidence than at the 1st, where you have to drive over water and head downhill where you then face a tough approach shot to a green guarded by a lake ringed dramatically with Pete Dye-style railway sleepers. Great stuff!
Favourite hole
The Abbotts Course’s 7th is a proper golfer’s test. The second par-5 you will encounter on this course, it needs to be played for position. There’s water on left, which is a danger for the mis-hit tee shot. The ideal shot off the tee is a soft draw, shaping itself round the water on the left. Then you must keep the ball in play on a tree-lined fairway with a nice, straight second, before hitting to a generous sized green guarded by more water on the right. A par here feels like a good result indeed.
The clubhouse
This is a wonderful and quirky 17th century barn conversion that simply reeks of character both inside and out and offers panoramic views over the 18th green. There isn’t a straight line in sight – and that includes the walls and ceilings! – and the exposed timbers and wood panelling create a wonderfully welcoming and warm atmosphere that is rare among even the oldest and grandest golf clubs. The relaxed atmosphere also provides an ideal opportunity to recharge your batteries and have a chat with the friendly members.
