A mile or two away from the beautiful city of Edinburgh a true test of Scottish golf awaits those who make the short jaunt southwest near the delightfully named Juniper Green.
Celebrating its centenary in 1995 the club gets its name from the original suburb of Torphin, which, according to legend comes from the Scottish Gaelic ‘torr fionn’ meaning ‘white tor’.
Lying on the southern slopes of Corby Hill and the eastern slope of Warklaw Hill, Torphin Hill Golf Club is regarded as Edinburgh’s top course thanks in part to its location being some eight feet higher than that of ‘Arthur’s Seat’ - the city’s famous extinct volcano.
With this enviable juxtaposition the course is blessed with breathtaking views across the Firth of Forth estuary and Edinburgh city making it not only a picturesque track but an undulating and challenging one too.
The clubhouse
Originally a family home, the clubhouse retains this natural warmth and is instantly accommodating offering the members and visitor everything they may require before negotiating this first rate golfing experience.
Jaimie Browne’s pro-shop will furnish you with all manner of golfing accoutrements and be sure to warm your cockles with the fine culinary delights within the adjoining bar and restaurant.
The course
Torphin Hill starts gently but rest assured this is the last time you’ll feel that sensation. A downhill par three of 137 yards welcomes you to the course - after that the fun really starts. The lowest tee position on the course belongs to the second hole and a steep sloping fairway stares down at you from above.
Some 360 yards away the green is perched high upon a plateau and demands an extremely well placed pair of shots to reach it safely in regulation.
