For over 100 years Withington Golf Club has been entertaining the golfing fraternity with its magnificent golf course and typically affable Mancunian personality.
Established originally as a nine-hole course back in 1892, the club has doubled in size over the last 116 years, making it a more than respectable 6,364 yards from the white tees. The layout is
fascinating and the multitude of high, whistling trees separating each hole makes it extremely picturesque and nicely sheltered from the elements.
As any good century-old golf club should, withington has a touch of natural class and a good golfing heritage. Golfers of Greater Manchester and beyond have been treading these fairways for so long, the absorption of tradition is evident everywhere at this fine golf club.
The clubhouse
Built in 1974 and later extended to house Steve Marr’s Pro Shop and steward’s quarters, the clubhouse is extremely welcoming and adorned with photographs of past champions and wooden plaques engraved in gold, illustrating the year-on-year winners for all to see – just how a real golf club should be. The atmosphere is extremely friendly, the facilities are excellent and the food is superb, providing everything a golfer needs before and after 18 holes at Withington Golf Club
The course
Beginning with a lovely par 3 of 150 yards, the first will test your short iron play from the off. The pro’s tip is to take an extra club as it’s your first shot of the day – advice to be well heeded as the
raised green not only has trees to the rear and sides, but also a trio of bunkers in front which will inevitably snap up anything that doesn’t quite make it!
A picturesque high tee welcomes you to the dogleg second and exactly 400 yards stand between you and the large green around the corner. It’s a great start to a lovely hole and one worth
savouring. Launch a nicely-drawn 3-wood around the corner towards the 150-yard marker on the far side and revel in the chance of floating a mid iron to the green up ahead – a cracking hole.
