Deep in the heart of the beautiful Peak District, Cavendish Golf Club has, over the last 80 years earned a reputation of being one of the best loved golf clubs in the area.
Designed in 1923 by legendary course architect Dr Alister MacKenzie the club has been entertaining its members and visitors alike ever since its inauguration two years later. Famous for his accomplishments at The Augusta National - Dr MacKenzie’s masterpiece of design – Cavendish Golf Club has every characteristic of a genius continuing his work.
The clubhouse
Renovated and extended over the years to accommodate the ever-increasing popularity of the game, the attractive Victorian clubhouse now boasts a fine veranda overlooking the 18th hole and magnificent Peak District Hills behind.
The atmosphere in the bar and restaurant is as you would expect from the people of Derbyshire – warm, welcoming and accommodating. Resident PGA Professional Simon Townend’s shop is well stocked and after another warm welcome and a bit of friendly banter a short walk up the hill will introduce you to the course at Cavendish Golf Club.
The course
As soon as you reach the tee you get a feel for the task ahead. The rolling, undulating fairways are laid out before you swaying back and forth, up and down across the valley floor. The hills surrounding the estate are magnificent and capture the scene like a giant amphitheatre.
The first eases you gently into your round along with its neighbours, the second and third. The trio of mid length par fours zigzag their way up the hillside gradually afford even better views as they go.
Breaking the theme, the fourth is a delightful par 3 of only 122 yards with a pretty pond the result of a gently flowing stream guarding the front. Its narrow 35 yard deep green can make club selection paramount and a bunker either side ask an accurate approach.
